Want to Lose Weight? Don't Run

Can you believe that running and jogging will not help you lose weight? Many people accounted their weight loss on jogging and running but according to Greg Brookes, a London-based, personal trainer, running might not be of help in losing weight. He said that the more time one spend running, the better he/she become at running and the more efficient the body gets so less energy will be spent and fewer calories will be burnt.

Aside from that, running has another disadvantage. Running is also bad for joints as the body weight is transmitted through the joints so with repetition, the joints like knee and ankles become weak and brittle.

I personally agree on Brookes' claim as I have tried running but ended up with joints pain and more hunger :p though I saw many people running to lose weight. Now I'm confused.

You have come up with an idea that I was also thinking about.
I totally agree with the fact that running put pressure on joints, and for overweight persons the pressure is much more problematic and I am one of those sufferers of running.
Couple of months back, I started running to lose my weight which was increasing gradually. After few days, while running my right ankle suddenly got twisted and I ended up breaking the fifth metatarsal of the same foot. I was advised for 1-month complete bed-rest by the doctor, and after one month of complete rest and eating, I added few more pounds to my previous weight.
Well, I am not saying that people should stop running. What I want to say that those who are overweight should not start their losing-weight mission with running. I think, for running you first need to keep your body in shape and ready for running. Start with 5 minutes of running, and then increase the duration of running gradually.

Of course, Mr. Brooks is correct about your body adapting to various physical exercises... but, this is equally true of all forms of exercise. When you frequently: Swim, Walk, Bicycle Ride, Canoe, Row, Weight Lift, and even Rock Climb - your body adapts to this consistent physical requirement and invariably compensates for it!

Consequently, a person should always perform a regimen of differing exercises to provide the greatest physical effect. Weightlifters do this by increasing repetitions with lower weights and alternately decreasing repetitions with higher weights and through focusing their efforts on different parts of the body each day.

Swimmers do the very same thing by doing: butterflies one day, the breast stroke the next, etc... and by varying the distances and stroke.

As far as joints are concerned, Running is definitely destructive. However, Jogging or Fast Walking doesn't offer the same deleterious effects and accomplishes the very same caloric burn - over time. Let's face it, two-legged creatures weren't built for running when it isn't absolutely necessary for life and limb! ;0)

Personally, I have never been overweight in my life and I practice "The Feast Or Famine Diet", which I honestly figured out by watching The Wild Kingdom in the 1970's. I frankly noticed that you never see a fat animal in the wild and I was overwhelmed by curiosity as to why? After all, they frequently gorge themselves at every meal with extremely high calorie fare like raw meat.

What's their secret? They eat until absolutely full and then don't eat again until ravenous for more food. After all, it takes a great deal of effort in order to honestly catch it. Consequently, I eat once a day until full - around lunchtime - to fully satiate my hunger... and then don't eat again, until the very next day.

While some may claim that this is unhealthy: I've never gotten sick, I've never been too thin or too fat, and my energy levels are always quite high. Nor, have I ever counted calories or worried excessively about exercise - even as a truck driver for over ten years. What can I say....

So good to know. I have crummy joints so I don't run and now I can use this as another reason :) Thanks.

Actually, a brisk walk is much better than running. I used to run a lot before but have now switched to walking.

mm, pretty sure running's going to help you lose weight. It is awful on your knees and joints though. Mine are destroyed now!

I am thinking about it because for me, running works. I am pretty certain of that but I think it depends on the body type. if you are older, better walk. My sister also introduced me to fitness cards. These sets of cards made a lot of difference to her.
