The Photo and Its Photographer

Yesterday, while reading news in the net, a picture caught my attention, the title of the news is Remember Kevin Carter. I read it and wept. I close the page and thought about it whole night.

Today, I still keep thinking about the photo and the story of the photographer who took it. I tried to search for the same article I read yesterday but I could not find it so I just looked around the net. Yesterday was the first time I saw the photo although it was taken several years ago.

The Photo

The photo was taken in 1993 during the Sudan famine and has won Pulitzer Award. The photo shows a famine-stricken child crawling to the United Nations camp nearby  and a vulture waiting for the child to die so it can eat it.

The Photographer

Kevin Carter, a South African photographer who was freelancing in war zones captured the image. In 1994, he received the Pulitzer Awards, and after two months, he committed suicide in his red pick-up truck parked near a small river by carbon-monoxide poisoning in Johannesburg, at the age 33. In his suicide note left on the passenger seat beneath a knapsack stated: "I'm really, really sorry. The pain of life overrides the joy to the point that joy does not exist."

I saw this news 2 months ago in a social networking site. When I saw the picture, my heart was tearing apart, you know that, I felt so sad seeing a child on that kind of situation. To the photographer, I guess he really felt guilty of not helping that child that is why he committed suicide. This story indeed taught me a lesson and I hope all of you also learned from this.

One might think the photographer had no feeling when they captured this picture instead of helping, but by taking this picture and spread it to the world, more helping hands are coming.

This photo shows the darkside of humanity, there is plenty of food and in many countries food goes in waste.

I saw this photo in facebook, I really shock with the story of this photo and I felt pity on the kid. And I told a story about this photo with my friends. They ask why Mr. Carter commit suicide? They added maybe he did not help a child to get into United Nations camp. That is why he committed suicide because of his conscience.

How sad that someone with the eyes to see pain and the ability to capture it to affect others didn't have a relationship with the One Who could possibly help him deal with it.

That's so incredible sad, I can't find words that seem appropiate. In such cases I always tend to think that the photographer helped the child after taking the photo, but maybe he couldn't do anything. Stories like that remind me that I can't be too grateful for everything I have, also we don't have much money.
