The Photo and Its Photographer

Yesterday, while reading news in the net, a picture caught my attention, the title of the news is Remember Kevin Carter. I read it and wept. I close the page and thought about it whole night.

Today, I still keep thinking about the photo and the story of the photographer who took it. I tried to search for the same article I read yesterday but I could not find it so I just looked around the net. Yesterday was the first time I saw the photo although it was taken several years ago.

The Photo

The photo was taken in 1993 during the Sudan famine and has won Pulitzer Award. The photo shows a famine-stricken child crawling to the United Nations camp nearby  and a vulture waiting for the child to die so it can eat it.

The Photographer

Kevin Carter, a South African photographer who was freelancing in war zones captured the image. In 1994, he received the Pulitzer Awards, and after two months, he committed suicide in his red pick-up truck parked near a small river by carbon-monoxide poisoning in Johannesburg, at the age 33. In his suicide note left on the passenger seat beneath a knapsack stated: "I'm really, really sorry. The pain of life overrides the joy to the point that joy does not exist."

A Date with Keanu Reeves last Night

Yes, last night, I had a date with Keanu Reeves, well sort of, hehehe...

Last night was Sunday night and it is usually my iron-day night. So, before I plugged in the iron, I took the DVD of The Day the Earth Stood Still, which my husband bought last Friday. The whole family was their doing their own things but when I announced that I would play a movie, they rushed to the living room and occupied their usual places.

The movie, The Day the Earth Stood Still released in 2008, starred Keanu Reeves (Matrix) as Klatu, Jennifer Conelly (Hulk, A Beautiful Mind) as Helen Benson, Jaden Smith (A Pursuit to Happyness, Karate Kid) as Jacob Benson, Kathy Bates (Titanic, The Blind Side) as Regina Jackson. The movie is a drama, thriller, science fiction about the end of the world. There is no difference with other earth-doomed movies as the story revolved in family, environment, and man's survival. It is a remake of a 1951 classic sci-fi movie about a visit of an alien, Klatu and his robot in earth.
When Klatu and the robot arrived in earth, the military considered them as a threat and open fired at him and the robot. The alien was wounded and was taken to a military facility where Helen Benson and other scientists were asked to study the alien. Helen and other scientists studied and cured the alien, who after few hours took the form of human and was able to speak. He called himself Klatu. Then came Regina Jackson, the US Secretary of Defense, and ordered that Klatu must be interrogated to know what was the alien's intention in Earth. With Helen's help, Klatu was able to escape the military facility.

Helen, Jacob - Helen's son, and Klatu met an old Chinese man who is also an alien that came to Earth 70 years ago to spy on human. The Chinese man said that Klatu must continue that plan of destruction as human cannot change and Earth must be saved. After the meeting, the three, Helen, Jacob and Klatu went to a forest where Klatu made a sphere that opened and welcomed the animals. Helen saw what Klatu did so Helen asked him about his purpose on Earth, Klatu answered that the Earth must be saved from human as people are endangering Earth. Helen tried to reason out with Klatu but he didn't believe that people will change and so he must continue the destruction of mankind. Jacob did not like Klatu and he was repetitively saying to his mom that Klatu must be killed. He secretly called 911 while they were resting in Helen's professor house that led to the capture of Helen.

Helen was brought to the military facility while Jacob accepted Klatu when Klatu saved him from falling off the bridge while trying to escape from Klatu. After the military failed to destroyed the robot, instead released bugs that ate everything, Regina asked Helen to go back to Klatu and convince him to stop. Jacob called Helen and agreed to meet with Klatu in the cemetery where Jacob's father was buried. Upon reaching the cemetery, Jacob asked Klatu to bring back his father but Klatu refused to do so saying that there are things that cannot be done. Jacob asked Klatu to leave him alone and after sometime Helen came and saw her son crying near his father's tomb. Upon seeing this, Klatu realized that people can change specially on the brink of disaster, so they went back to sphere. When they were nearby the sphere, the military bombed the sphere in an order by the President through Regina. The car where Helen, Jacob, Klatu, and Helen's fellow scientist was wrecked killing the later. As the three were trying to get inside the sphere, the bugs came and some of them entered Jacob and Helen. They were able to find rescue under the bridge but Jacob and Helen were dying. Klatu absorbed the bugs out of Jacob's and Helen's body and cured them. Klatu then ran to the sphere and disappered among the bugs. After few minutes, the bugs dropped on the ground, skies cleared, and sun shone, as people from all over the world started to come out from their hiding.

Well, it was worth to end a weekend's night as I did my ironing chore.

Brad Pitt Back to His Old Self

Photo Credit: Yahoo: Kevin Winter, Getty Images

At last! I get to see Brad Pitt in his old self, without his scraggy-looking beard! During the premier of "Salt" in Los Angeles, Brad Pitt joined partner Angelina Jolie on her latest film premier with a clean shave that his fans were missing since he started to grow his beard without any reason. Well, he gave a reason, saying that he was just bored, so maybe now he is not hehehe... Anyways, it's not really a news worth writing for, but I am happy to see him back looking young again. His time with full-bearded face seems he lived in a miserable life. I am personally elated now that he's back to being Brad Pitt again. By the way, I am not a Brad Pitt fan, rather a Jolie one. :-P

Prevent Colds and Coughs on Rainy Days

We are now experiencing heavy rains, in fact, a typhoon has just recently passed with casualties specially in northern part of the Philippines. With rainy season, not only rain pours, but also coughs and colds. Children are usually more prone to colds and coughs so it is very important that we provide them weapons against cough and colds during this season.

There are natural ways to avoid getting colds and coughs. One of them is drinking ginger tea. Just boil ginger in a water, then add a tablespoon of honey, and give this to your kid and to adults too.Ginger works as a preventive measure from colds, coughs, and indigestion.

Aside from ginger, honey is good in fighting cough and colds. Use honey instead of sugar in milk or in lemonade, or just have a teaspoon of honey everyday.

Drinking carrot juice is also a boosting power against cough and colds. Just blend one carrot with water and then sweeten it with honey.

Rainy days should not be the reason not to enjoy the rain. Increasing immunity and making the body strong are the keys to enjoy even on rainy days. Grab your umbrella and let's dance under the rain!

Playing Trick with Mind on Losing Weight

Do you know that you can lose weight, or at least eat less by deceiving your mind? That's what just my husband did to me.

Last night before going to sleep, I was hit by a hunger pang when in fact I ate enough for dinner. I tried to control myself as I know eating before bedtime will make me gain weight. As I was complaining of being hungry before bedtime, my husband checked the fridge and took out some left over pasta and re-heat it. He showed me a plate full of pasta after some time. He told me to close my eyes, and then he gave me a fork and asked me to dig in. As I finished the pasta in the plate, I felt that I was satisfied, and prepared to sleep.

When I woke up this morning and starting to prepare breakfast, I was surprised to see a bowl of left-over pasta in the fridge. I thought I finished them last night so I asked my husband about it. He just smiled and told me that he just gave me a small portion of it last night.

I told him why he did that, he said that he remember an article he read in a magazine I recently bought stating that according to study, a person can lose weight by deceiving the mind of the quantity of the food eaten. The study showed that there were two groups of participants were one group were shown large serving of food and another a small serving. After that, they were blindfolded as they eat the same amount of serving for both groups. The result is the group which was shown a small serving felt hunger after several hours while the other group were not. So, he decided to test whether the study is true or not. And of course, he was quite concern about my well-being as I complain of gaining weight.

5 Unforgettable Things about WORLD CUP 2010

I was actually thinking of 10 but could not complete my list so I decided to go by with 5. Well, I promised to end my World Cup blogging but I could not resist this one ( I promise for the last time that this is the last! hehehe) as football thoughts come to my mind even in the middle of the night, like this list.

1. Spain as a champion!
What else could be the number one than having Spain team to win the title. Of course, World Cup brought so many surprises but nobody would thought that Spain will grab it. It would be more surprising if the Dutch could have won the cup, what do you think?

2. Paul, the octopus
This ocean creature became when he chose Spain over Germany to win in the semi-finals after continuously choosing Germany in the latter's previous matches. The gambling sites were in abuzz about his predictions.

3. Controversial Jabulani ball
Since the beginning of the tournament, there were already claims made by the players that this ball is different from the usual soccer ball but Adidas, the maker of Jabulani disagreed on these claims.

4. Loud Vuvuzelas
If you are watching the games on television, you must get used of the constant buzzing sound. This long horn that is proudly part of African culture divides the crowd on the issue of being fun or annoying. I agree on the second, though.

5. Shakira's Waka-Waka
To contradict the loud and buzzing noise of Vuvuzela, why not listen to the World Cup Anthem Waka-Waka. This tournament's song is a combined English and African languages. And don't miss Shakira's belly dance with it.

So, I bet you do not agree with my list, how about make a list of you own. :-P

IT'S ITCHY DOWN THERE! 5 Natural Remedies for Itch and Yeast Infection

I can say personally that one of the tortures of being a woman is the vaginal itch and yeast infection. I know most of the women will agree on this statement. According to studies, 3 out of 4 women suffers from vaginal itch and/or yeast infection, and sadly to say but I belong to that number. Yeah, It is ITCHY down there! Whenever my monthly period would come or about to end, or whenever I am stressed out, I expect that this problem will come. Itch and yeast infection are caused by changing of hormones like approaching or ending of menstrual period, suffering from physical and emotional stress, and coming to menopausal stage.

The severity of vaginal itch and yeast infection varies from mild to intense itchiness. I recommend that for women who suffer moderate to intense itchiness to consult the gynecologist immediately. For mild cases, I suggest the following 5 natural remedies that I have tried:

1. Eating yogurt. Yeast infection happens due to the imbalance of hormone and acidity in that part. So in order to balance it, we need the live bacteria present in yogurt. Eating a cup of yogurt every day helps to stop the yeast infection from recurring.

2. Apple cider Vinegar. For immediate relief from itchiness, pour 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a  shallow dish, then put 2 tablespoon of water. Dip the cotton on the mixture and dab it on the affected area. This will cause some burning sensation for some seconds. Vinegar will kill the bacteria that cause itchiness.

3. Garlic. Another immediate relief for itchiness is by using garlic. Peel 1 clove of garlic, then crush it till the juice comes out. Place the juice of the garlic in a shallow dish and put drops of water. Dip the cotton and dap on affected area. This will cause burning sensation which is more painful than apple cider vinegar but I swear that you just need to apply this once and the itchiness will go away forever (till you are again affected by it).

4. Baking soda. Add a tablespoon of baking soda to a dipper  full of water and use this to wash the private area.

5. Peroxide. This is the liquid medicine like Betadine that you use in washing wounds. Pour a capful to a quarter-full of water in a dipper and use this to wash the private area. Use regularly until the itchiness disappear.

Aside from those remedies, make sure not to use soap with perfume, also a non-cotton underwear is a no-no. Shaving the area is also a good as the bacteria will not reside on the hair. Keeping oneself clean always and eating healthy food are also the big help in avoiding vaginal itch and yeast infection.

Amazing Coca-Cola World Cup Ad

In my previous post, I mentioned that I'm done with World Cup, but before I fully close my World Cup 2010 experience, there is one thing that I want to embed in my blog that this tournament has given us which is truly amazing. It is the Coca-Cola's ad on history of celebration of World Cup. It's really funny, mesmerizing, and just fantastic. The song, Wavin Flag by K'naan is so great too. Kept watching it on TV and even in YouTube!

I'm Done with World Cup!

Yes my friends! I am done with World Cup!

After watching my favorite teams, Brazil and Argentina lost and disqualified for the semi-finals, I think I'm through with World Cup. I have spent sleepless nights just to watch my fave teams on their games, that means staying up till dawn just to support them even at the far end of television. But, to my dismay, I am just tired and exhausted and sleep-deprived with a broken heart seeing my teams being defeated... badly defeated!

Now, I do not need to stay myself awaken till early morning. I do not need to endure the annoying buzz of vuvuzelas. Thank God! I'm done being crazy with football... till next four years, though! :-)

For now, I will just keep on humming Shakira's Waka-Waka. Sing with me folks!

Shakira on Waka-Waka, the World Cup 2010 South Africa official theme song.
